RUBY

FADE IN:

EXT/INT.  PHILADELPHIA WESTSIDE COMMUNITY CENTER/EVENING

RUBY is getting off the city bus across from the community center. She dodges traffic as she jogs across the street through the community center gates. The boys are playing basketball on the outside court. The girls are in a huddle laughing and talking on their cell phones. Ruby, wearing her backpack, walks past them as the guys on the court whistle and catcall. She throws her hand up in a wave and keeps walking. Inside the community center, kids in the foyer are waiting for their parents. A volleyball tournament is in full swing on the basketball court, and the opposing team’s coach blows the whistle for a time-out.  Kids and parents watch in the stand, moaning about the time out. Ruby walks inside the office and sees the director, MRS. EVELYN WESTLAKE talking to a familiar beautiful petite woman. She nods her head in a greeting, signs her timecard, turns to walk out, and is stopped by Mrs. Evelyn.

 EVELYN

Ruby, I would like you to meet my sister, Angela. Angela, this is our prize student Ruby.

RUBY

WOW, Angela Toussaint! Are you Mrs. Evelyn’s sister?  Mrs. Evelyn, why you didn’t tell me? She is my shero…I mean, you are, Mrs. Toussaint …my shero I mean, good evening, Mrs. Toussaint. It is wonderful to meet you. I’m Ruby Mazwell; I mean, Maxwell.

EVELYN

[laughing)

Ruby, pull yourself together. That’s why I didn’t mention it.

RUBY

I know everything about you. I have your performance, Cygnet en noir, on my phone. I watch it all the time.

Angela Toussaint holds her hand out for Ruby to shake. Ruby goes in for a hug, wrapping her arms around her.

EVELYN

Ruby, you are going to squeeze the life out of her. Let her go.

                         ANGELA

[laughing]

That’s ok, Evelyn; I’m used to this. It never gets old.

Angela gives Ruby a tight squeeze and lets her go. She steps back, holds Ruby’s hands away from her side, and looks her over.

    ANGELA

My, but you are a pretty little thing. You remind me of myself when I was your age.

EVELYN

When you were her age? Angela, you aren’t an inch bigger than Ruby is right now.

Angela smiles at Ruby, let her hands go, and turns to her sister.

ANGELA

We dancers have to stay on top of our figures.

We can’t go on pointe by eating pizza and

 cheeseburgers.

Ruby laughs nervously and picks up her bag to leave before Angela asks

her what she had for lunch.

RUBY

My class is starting in a few minutes; I better

get ready. Mrs. Toussaint, it was great meeting

you. You are my everything…I mean, I really love

your work. I hope we can meet again someday soon. Maybe you can give me some advice?

ANGELA

Ruby, do you mind if I sit in on your class? I would love to see your technique. I can give you some pointers afterwards.

RUBY

I would love that! Mrs. Evelyn, would that

EVELYN

Yes, ma’am. I’m going to sit and watch you today myself. I need to make sure that when your class is over, Angela brings her behind right on out. She’s treating me to dinner tonight.

 ENT/ COMMUNITY CENTER/EVENING/Dance studio

Students enter the studio and hang their backpacks on the wall while Ruby performs barre hamstring stretches, preparing for class. Angela, Evelyn, and some of the parents sit in the conference area and watch Ruby warm up. Angela is shocked and mesmerized by Ruby’s grace and elegance.

ANGELA

Evelyn, did you say that Ruby has no formal ballet training?

EVELYN

That’s right; she’s a natural. I hope she sticks with it. She has a lot of potential.

ANGELA

Potential is not even the word, Evelyn. Do you know that this child has more talent than dancers with…I would say…10 years under their belt.

EVELYN

She is talented…I’ve got to give it to her.

ANGELA

Evelyn, remember I told you I was looking for an assistant for my new studio? Ruby would be perfect. She has the personality, and she fits in perfectly with my vision.

EVELYN

Angela, Ruby is fourteen and in school. Her mother will never allow her to go to New York. Yes, Ruby is an old soul, but she is still a child.

ANGELA

I can bring in a private tutor. She can live with me. It will be an internship. I can pay her, plus she can add it to her portfolio.

EVELYN

Her mom is a friend of mine, Angela. I already know there is no way Niemi is going to allow Ruby to move to New York.

         ANGELA

It’s not like it’s across the world. It’s less than two hours away. Ruby can come home on the weekends if she so chooses. You know it would be a life-changing opportunity for…

Angela and Evelyn are interrupted by three women.

LADY 1

Excuse us, ma’am, but aren’t you Angela

Toussaint from Black Swan?

ANGELA

Yes, ma’am, that would be me.

The ladies in the back whisper and laugh among themselves.

LADY 2

[to Lady 3]

I told you that was her. This is so exciting; maybe we can get an autograph and a picture.

Angela, appreciative but just a little bothered by the interruption, stands up to talk to the women.

ANGELA

I appreciate you ladies so much, but can we talk after this class? This is very important to me. I will take pictures and sign anything you like.

The ladies nod and return to their seat as Ruby address her students. She glances across the room at Angela and smiles before addressing the group.

RUBY

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. We have a very special guest visiting us this evening. Can we give a hand to a woman who needs no introduction… but I am going to introduce her anyway? An inductee into the National Museum of Dance and the Hall of Fame, plus the winner of the outstanding female classical performance for Cygnet en noir. My mentor, Madame Angela Toussaint.

Angela stands up and takes a bow. The students and the audience applaud for over two minutes. Angela tears up, knowing she will miss the applause in the next stage of her life.

RUBY

Now, we will warm up by doing a couple of grand plies. Then we will start in quasi and do tendi 2 ,3,4. That is just a warm-up before we do a run thru Vender Hjem. Do any of you have any questions?

KENDRA

Ruby, will you go through the dance one time for us? It would really help us out.

RUBY

Yes, I will be happy to. Since I have already warmed up, I will go through the dance after you finish. Ok, you guys…let’s go to the barre.

The class warms up, then moves to the side for Ruby to take center stage. “Tell me your mine,” from Ruby’s favorite CD, Trip the Night Fantastic, starts playing. Ruby goes on pointe and begins twirling into her routine. Angela stands and watches her, with her hands over her mouth in disbelief. She turns and looks at Evelyn, who smiles and nods her head. Ruby finishes and takes a bow. As the studio stands and applause, Angela looks around the room in amazement. As the students take the floor to replicate the moves Ruby performed, Angela sits and addresses her sister again.

ANGELA

Ok, now tell me again why you won’t help me.

EVELYN

Ok, ok, I will talk with Ruby’s mom. But you first have to ask Ruby. She might not want to go.

The sisters look at each other without a word and then explode in laughter as they walk toward Ruby, who is dismissing the class.

ENT/ RUBY’S HOME IN SOUTH PHILADELPHIA/ DAYTIME-WEEKEND

Evelyn Westlake, the sister of Angela Toussaint and the director of Philadelphia’s Westside Community Center, is visiting Niemi Maxwell, Ruby’s mother. The two ladies are sitting at the kitchen table, discussing Angela’s offer.

EVELYN

Niemi, you know I wouldn’t bring any foolishness to your table. Ruby has talent. My sister sees that in her. She wants to spend time with Ruby and train her up, so there is no doubt she’ll get into Julliard. That’s all Ruby talks about. This way, Ruby will have a chance.

NIEMI

Ruby is only fourteen. How can she know what she wants to do with her life? I know Ruby. She is going to do this dancing thing and get everyone invested, and then she will quit. I know my child. She’s had an interest in over fifty activities alone this year, ice skating, swimming, piano playing, acting.  She changes so quickly that I can’t keep up with what she is doing. In the meantime, money is flying out of my pockets like I have a vacuum cleaner attached to my hips. No, Evelyn, I can’t do it. She’s fourteen, and she needs to be here with me.

EVELYN

But Niemi…didn’t you just say that you were about to do your own internship? Your company is about to send you out of the country. What are you planning on doing with Ruby?

NIEMI

What do you mean? I’m taking Ruby with me.

EVELYN

Niemi, don’t you see? This is the perfect opportunity for you and Ruby. You get to pursue your dreams, and Ruby gets to follow hers. She will still get an education and be with someone who will take good care of her. I can vouch for my sister. Plus, Ruby loves her. Just think about it, Niemi. It’s just for a year. If Ruby has changed her mind by then, no harm, no foul. It’s an internship. My sister is going to cover all the expenses.

NIEMI

Is she that good, Evelyn? Your sister is the best dancer in the world. Does she see that much potential in Ruby?

Niemi stares at Evelyn nodding her head.

ENT/MANHATTAN, NEW YORK/NIGHT/ HOME OF DAVID & ANGELA TOUSSAINT

David, Angela, & Ruby are in the theater room, watching the American Documentary show, Biography, featuring Angela. The show ends, and Angela turns the lights on. She has tears in the corner of her eyes and sniffles as she blows her nose.

RUBY

Ms. Angela, are you ok? Didn’t you like your documentary?

ANGELA

It’s not that I didn’t like it, Ruby. But they tell my life story as if I’m unsung. I’ve accomplished everything I wanted career-wise and more. You would think I hadn’t accomplished anything just because I don't have children.

DAVID

Honey, it’s no secret that you put motherhood on hold to pursue your dreams. Everyone that knows you know that already. I wouldn’t put too much into what this no-name television show says. We know the truth.

Angela looks over at Ruby, who is close to going to sleep in the theater chair.

ANGELA

Ruby, you go on up to bed. I want to talk to David alone.

Ruby gets up from the comfortable chair to go upstairs. She looks over at Angela and David, worried about the conversation they were about to have

RUBY

This conversation isn’t going to be about me, is it? I’ve been here for three months, and everything is too perfect. Have I overstayed my welcome? Do you want me to leave Ms. Angela?

ANGELA

 Oh, no…You are absolutely darling.

I can’t let you go yet. I need you. The school needs you. Everything is fine. I just need a minute with Mr. Toussaint alone.

Angela kisses Ruby on the forehead and walks her to the door. She closes the door behind her.  She takes a deep breath and stands with her back to David before turning around.

ANGELA

Come, David, let's sit. I have some news to share with you. You're not going to be pleased as I wasn't either.

David grabs Angela's hands and brings them to his lips.

DAVID

What's going on, honey? I’m sure whatever it is, we'll get through it. We always have. You know I hate to see you upset like this.

ANGELA

I know, but I can't help it. Listen to me, baby. I went to the Fertility Center today about unthawing my eggs.

Angela hesitates and turns away from David.  David grabs her by the shoulders and turns her around, holding her close to him.

ANGELA

David, they don't have my eggs. My eggs have been destroyed.

Angela cries uncontrollably. David holds her, feeling her vibration as she shakes in his arms. He pulls her up and wipes her face with his sweater, shooshing her.

DAVID

Listen, we will have our baby the natural way. Just have your IUD removed. We will be ok. There is more than one way to skin a cat.

ANGELA

David, I don’t have an IUD. I haven’t had an IUD for a while now.

DAVID

Wait, what are you saying to me? I thought you had an IUD.

ANGELA

I had it removed a year ago. I didn’t tell you because I wanted it to be a surprise when I got pregnant.

Angela pauses before continuing.

ANGELA

I went to see my gynecologist today, and she did an examination and ran some tests.

DAVID

Well, what were the results?

Angela is silent.

DAVID

Angela, what were the results?

Angela slowly turned around and faced David. He searched her face, a sad expression in her eyes. She shakes her head.

ANGELA

David, I can’t give you a child.

David turns away from Angela and places his hands on his head. Angela grabs his arm to comfort him, and he pulls away. The silence in the room grows until David turns around with tears in his eyes.

DAVID

I’m not sure you didn’t do this on purpose, Angela.

ANGELA

David, what are you talking about? I love you; we had an agreement. I would never…

     DAVID

[furious}

You would never what? You have been avoiding it for thirteen years. I knew in my heart it was never going to happen. I’ve been a damn fool all these years thinking you loved me and wanted a part of me like I wanted a part of you. So now what, Angela? Where do we go from here?

ANGELA

[Crying]

David, we can still have kids. We can adopt. I read an article yesterday about…

DAVID

I don’t want to hear a damn thing about some article you’ve read. I’ve heard enough…I’m leaving!

ANGELA

David, don’t go! Please don’t leave. Let me make it up to you. I will do whatever you want. Let me make it right, David.

David ignores Angela’s cries and walks to the side door.

He opens the door, steps out, and turns around.

DAVID

This is not goodbye, Angela; I just need to cool off. I’m a stupid fool for loving you like I do. I will come back like I always do. Right now, I need time to think.

INT/ MORNING/KITCHEN OF DAVID AND ANGELA TOUSSAINT

Angela sits at the kitchen island looking into her coffee mug, eyes red from crying. Ruby enters, carrying her backpack and chatting about the plans for the day. She opens the refrigerator and grabs a bottle of juice before turning and seeing Angela’s red eyes and swollen face.

RUBY

Oh my God, Ms. Angela, are you ok? What’s wrong?... Is there something I can do?

ANGELA

No, Ruby…thanks anyway. You know, looking at me, you would think I have it all. I am on the cover of Eleven magazines this month, and I am sitting here crying in my coffee. Are you sure this is the life you want, Ruby? Fame comes with a lot of disappointments and sacrifices.

RUBY

I want to be just like you. I don’t mind making sacrifices, and I’m used to disappointments. I will do everything I can to get into Julliard and have a chance at living my dream. I want to be the best dancer in the world…I mean, after you retire, of course.

ANGELA

[laughs softly]

No, RUBY… You should want to be better than me. Do you think all those young ladies playing against Serena Williams want to be her? No, they want to be better than Serena. They want to rise to a level where she’s never been. You have that in you, Ruby. That’s why I want you here. You have the potential to be much greater than I am. I just wanted to be a dancer; everything fell into place. Yes, I worked hard, but I didn’t have that hunger that you have.

RUBY

Thank you, Ms. Angela. I hope I don’t disappoint you. I appreciate all that you have done for me. One day I am going to pay you back and make you proud.

                   ANGELA

You could never disappoint me, Ruby. And I am already proud of you. But if you are serious about doing anything to get into Julliard, I have a proposition for you.

Angela pats the stool beside her, motioning Ruby to sit by her. She tells Ruby of her plan and goes through every detail. When she finishes, she turns to Ruby, who is in shock.

ANGELA

Do you have any questions for me, Ruby?

RUBY

What happens if my mom visits or I go home? She will notice.

ANGELA

That is the only issue. I think I can take care of that if you are ok with just talking to your mom by phone from here on out.

RUBY

We didn’t really see each other that much anyway, with us both in school and her job. So, I guess that will be ok.

Angela gets up and goes to her office. She comes back and gives Ruby an envelope. Ruby opens it, and her eyes buck. She choked on her bottled water.

RUBY

This is a check for $100,000. This check has my name on it. Are you serious? 100,000.00?

ANGELA

You didn’t think I would ask you to do this for me for free, did you? On top of this, I will also see that you get an audition at Julliard. I don’t have to get you in; you will do that yourself the moment you go up on pointe.

RUBY

Does Mr. David know?

ANGELA

David and I had a conversation this morning. He is on board with everything. He will be the one who takes you to your appointments. You will be his niece, just in case anyone asks. I will be here for you in every way. We will have the best private doctor and the best care possible.

Ruby looks at the check and looks at Angela, and smiles.

RUBY

Talk about sacrifices…I’m all in.

Ruby folds the check and puts it in her backpack. She goes to Angela and gives her a tight squeeze.  Angela, however, continues holding onto her and doesn’t let go.

INT/MORNING/DAVID & ANGELA TOUSSAINT HOME/ NINE MONTHS LATER

Ruby is on the toilet, eyes big as she pees. She stands up and looks down at the floor as water runs down her leg.

RUBY

[yelling]

Angela?... I think it’s time…Angela?

Rudy waddles down the hall and knocks on Angela & David’s bedroom door. No one answers, and she opens the door to an empty room. She moans and leans over. She picks up the phone, calls David’s number, and gets his voicemail.  She calls Angela’s number, and Angela picks up on the first ring.

RUBY

[crying]

Angela, my water broke…I think the baby is coming. I am in a lot of pain. David is not here; I don’t know what to do.   I’ve never done this before, Angela; I’m scared.

ANGELA

Ruby, remember, in Lamaze class, we learned how to count contractions. How far apart are yours?

RUBY

They are five minutes apart and have been like this for almost an hour.

ANGELA

Ruby, listen to me. I am going to call MEMS to come for you. I am going to meet you at the hospital. You are going to be fine. I love you, Ruby, and I am so proud of you. Get dressed, and get your bag. I am going to find David and be on my way. Bye-bye, honey.

Ruby hangs up the phone and walks back to the bathroom. She brushes her teeth quickly and puts her jeans on. She slips her feet into her shoes, and the doorbell rings. She grabs her keys and bags and heads to the door.

INT/ GENERAL HOSPITAL-NEW YORK/ LABOR AND DELIVERY

RUBY has given birth to a little girl. David is at her bedside, holding the baby. Ruby closes her eyes, and the nurse enters the room and addresses Ruby.

 NURSE

Ruby, we’re going to take her, get her prints, and clean her up. We will bring her right back.

David gives the baby to the nurse, pulls up a chair, and sits at Ruby's bedside. He nudges her, and she opens up her eyes and smiles.

                                                DAVID

You are awesome, young lady. Can I get you something?

RUBY

May I have some water, please? I am so exhausted. Where is Angela? She said she would be here.

 DAVID

She must have gotten tied up. I’ve tried to call her several times, but I keep getting her voicemail. You get some rest, young lady. Let me worry about Angela.

David stands up, kisses Ruby on the cheek, and leaves. The nurse returns with the baby and places her on Ruby’s chest. Ruby kisses her on the top of her head.

NURSE

She is a beautiful baby; do you have a name for her?

RUBY

Yes, her name is Angel NI Toussaint. She is named after my aunt, who agreed to raise her while I attend school.

NURSE

Oh, yes, Mrs. Toussaint. She is on the front of Cosmopolitan Magazine this month. She is a beautiful woman. Your aunt is very talented. Angel will be in good hands.

RUBY

She was supposed to be here. She hasn’t called either. I’m worried.

NURSE

Oh, honey, don’t worry…What you need is rest. She probably got caught in that traffic. This morning, there was a terrible accident, and traffic has been backed up on the interstate for hours. You spend a little time with Ms. Angel, and then I will return and get her so you can get some rest. Do you need me to get you anything? I ordered a tray for you earlier, and I will bring you towels for your shower.

RUBY

Can you turn on the tv, please?

NURSE

I sure can. You call me if you need anything else.

Ruby repositions the baby across her chest and wraps the blanket around her. She picks up the remote and flips through the channels. Her hand stops at a breaking news story regarding the accident on the freeway. Ruby turns the sound up, looking at the baby for a reaction. She sits up in bed when she sees a familiar, almost unrecognizable car in the background behind the news reporter. The tow truck pulls off, and Ruby recognizes the custom license plate on what was left of the car and screams hysterically.

EXT-DAY-WOODLAWN CEMETERY-BRONX, NEW YORK/DAY

Six days after Angela Toussaint’s horrible crash, the world gathers to pay its respects to the great dancer. Angela’s friends from all over the world pass by Ruby and David and offers condolence. Ruby remains seated at the graveside as doves are released and the crowd is dismissed. David comes to her, bends down at her side, and speaks softly.

DAVID

Ruby, it’s time to leave, honey. We are going back to the house. Let me walk you to the car.

Ruby takes David’s arm, and they walk to the black SUV where security is waiting with the door open. David gives instructions to the distracted driver, staring at Ruby.

DRIVER

I apologize, sir. It’s just that your niece looks just like Mrs. Toussaint.

DAVID

Just drive and keep your eyes on the road.

DRIVER

Yes, sir.

David closes the partition and begins telling Ruby about his plans for them. Ruby listens, getting irritated as David talks about his proposal.

RUBY

David, I’m going home.

DAVID

What?

RUBY

I’m going home. I’ve sat here and listened to your plans, but you need to listen to mine. I’ve done what I said I was going to do. I’m going home. My job is done.

DAVID

What about Angel?

RUBY

Angel is your baby to raise. That was the agreement. I’ve done my part. I’m going back to Philly, where I have a family.

DAVID

Angel and I are your family now. I don’t have anyone to help raise her. I need you to stay.

RUBY

I don’t know anything about raising a child, and I don’t want to know. I don’t want a baby. That is what you wanted. That is what I gave you. Read my lips, David; I AM DONE. My plane leaves in the morning at 6:45. I am going home, David…I’m going home.

  DAVID

If you want to leave me, I understand. But Angel needs you. She needs a mother. Angela is no longer here. I can’t raise Angel alone.

RUBY

I don’t know what to tell you, David. Angel is a sweetheart, but she is not my child. She is your child. I don’t have another answer for you. All I know is that it’s time for me to go.

        DAVID

Angel is your child, Ruby. She has your blood running through her veins. If you want to go, go. Run on home to mommy. But don’t think that this is over. You haven’t seen the last of me; believe that, Ruby Maxwell.

The SUV pulls up into the drive. Ruby jumps out, bypasses the front door where the visitors are parked, and enters through the servants' quarters.

EXT/MORNING/PHILADELPHIA NATIONAL AIRPORT/07:45

Ruby steps outside the airport to her mother’s red Lexus, parked next to the no parking zone. Ruby smiles, shakes her head, puts her bags behind the passenger seat, and closes the door. Niemi, standing behind her, grabs her and holds her tight. Ruby and Niemi tightly hold each other before Niemi kisses Ruby all over her face. Ruby laughs and cries as she gets inside the vehicle. As Niemi pulls away, Ruby searches all the different faces she sees in her window. Hoping none of them belong to David.

ENT/ RUBY’S HOME IN SOUTH PHILADELPHIA/ DAYTIME-ONE YEAR LATER

Ruby is changing clothes to go to the community center. She reaches into her closet and pulls out her backpack. Realizing she hadn’t touched it since she returned home, she slowly opens it. Inside a folder, she finds Angel’s footprints and id band. She puts the folder back and hangs the backpack on a nail before seeing the paper sticking out of the side pocket. She pulls the paper out and sees Angela’s name written on the cashier’s check. Ruby traces Angela’s name and the zeros on the check and starts crying. Her best friend, Kendra, knocks on her bedroom door and sticks her head in.

KENDRA

Are you ready, bestie?

RUBY

You know, Kendra…I don’t think I’m going to go back today after all. I’m not ready. I really don’t feel like dancing today, either.

KENDRA

Ruby, are you sure? Mrs. Westlake was asking about you. I promised her you were coming today.

RUBY

I will call and talk to her.

KENDRA

You said that last week.

RUBY

Kendra!

KENDRA

I’m just saying. Look, Ruby, you’re not the only one who’s lost, someone. Mrs. Westlake lost her sister. Yet she has managed to keep going. I’m not trying to tell you how to grieve, but you are going to have to get it together.

Ruby

I will call you Kendra.

KENDRA

I’m sorry, RUBE…I’ll talk to you later.

Ruby sits on her bed and grabs her pillow. The tears start to form in her eyes as she looks at the cashier’s check. She picks up a picture of Angela sitting on her nightstand. She takes the picture apart and hides the check inside the frame. She hears the door close behind Kendra and goes to the window. She can hear her mother tell Kendra that she would try to talk to her. Ruby rolls her eyes as she hears her mother calling. Ruby swears under her breath and goes downstairs. Niemi is standing in the window. She sits on the sofa and pats a space right next to her.

NIEMI

Ruby, sit here beside me, baby. We need to have a little chat.

RUBY

Is this about Kendra? I don’t know why she makes such a big deal out of….

NIEMI

[interrupting Ruby]

This is not about Kendra. This is about you, baby. I’m worried about you. You have been in a funk ever since you came back from New York. You are not eating. You are not getting enough sleep. You no longer go to the community center. Now I know you are still grieving Angela’s death. But, honey, she wouldn’t want you to be like this. She loved you. I love you. I think you need to talk to some… [doorbell rings) wait right here, honey…we’re not done.

Niemi sees a handsome man with a sexy smile and goatee on the other side of her peephole and opens the door.

NIEMI

Good afternoon; how can I help you?

       DAVID

Hi, my name is DJ, and I just moved in next door. I was trying to hang some pictures using my drill, but I need an extension cord. Can I trouble you? If you have one.

Niemi flashes a big flirty smile.

NIEMI

Yes, I have one, and you can borrow it. Do you need anything else?

DAVID

No…No, just the extension cord.

Niemi turns her head and shouts inside the door.

NIEMI

Ruby? Ruby honey, can you look in the laundry room and bring me that extension cord off of the shelf? It’s green. Thanks, honey.

NIEMI

So, where are you from…DJ, is it?

DAVID

I’m originally from Chicago but moved here from Long Island.

NIEMI

Well, welcome to the neighborhood DJ.

Are you married? Do you have any kids?

DAVID

I’m a widower; my wife recently passed. It’s just my daughter and me.

NIEMI

I’m so sorry to hear that. Well, I would like to meet your daughter one day. And if you need anything, don’t hesitate to ask. We believe in helping out in this neighborhood.

Ruby walks up behind her mother, hearing a familiar but unrecognizable voice. She looks over her mother’s shoulder, and the blood drains from her face. David is standing at the door with a smirk on his face. Ruby puts her finger to her mouth, silently begging David to say nothing.

NIEMI

Ruby, this is DJ; he just moved in next door. He has a daughter; maybe the both of you can hang out together sometime.

DAVID

Oh no, ma’am, my Angel is a baby. In fact, she just celebrated her first birthday.

NIEMI

Oh, ok. Well, if you ever need a sitter, Ruby and I love babies. We’d be glad to help you out. Maybe you can bring her over soon so we can meet her.

DAVID

I certainly will. She is just like her name says; She’s a little angel. She looks just like her mother too.

David stares directly at Ruby, who immediately walks away from the door.

NIEMI

Excuse my daughter; she’s also lost someone dear to her and is still grieving.

DAVID

I perfectly understand. Thank you for letting me use this, and I will bring it back to you as soon as I’m finished.

NIEMI

No, Problem.

EXT./DAVID TOUSSAINT’S FRONT YARD-PHILADELPHIA — DAY

David walks across the lawn with a slight smirk on his face. He knows his visit has had an impact on Ruby. He knows he has her where he wants her. All he has to do now is sit back and wait. David smiles and hums the black swan overture. Hearing it a thousand times, when Angela parted the sea of white swans during her gracious victory dance, it always sent chills up and down his spine. It is the same feeling he has now; a hop, skip and jump from rising on his own toes.

INT./ENTRYWAY OF DAVID TOUSSAINTS’HOME/DAY

David unlocks the door, dances in the entryway, and trips on several large bags.

DAVID

What the hell… Maria, Maria…What are all of these bags doing in the hallway?

David opens one of the large bags and pulls out a tiny pink hat with pom-poms dangling from the end. David holds the small hat in both hands and presses it to his nose. The lavender scent David inhales brings tears to his eyes. He remembers the day Angela brought the hat with matching gloves home, with Angel's initials embroidered in blue, just in case Angel turned out to be a boy. David traces the initials of the hat as he reminisces. A N T, Angel Nia Toussaint. David sits for what seems like forever, thinking about Angela. Remembering Angela never saw Angel shakes him. He pulls more clothing out of the bag, getting heated with each piece. David rips the other bags apart, revealing toys, clothing, and baby shoes belonging to Angel. Filled with rage, David calls Maria again.

DAVID

Maria? Maria, get in here right now!

Maria rushed down the stairs shushing David with her hands.

MARIA

Mr. Toussaint, you are going to wake Angel, I just laid her down for her nap.

DAVID

Maria, what is all of Angel's stuff doing in these bags?

MARIA

This is the stuff I'm getting rid of.

It's too small for Angel. The church is

going to pick these items up in a few

minutes. Why did you take them out of the bags?

David stood with his hands on his waist, looking at Maria. The vein at his left temple pulsating and his breathing heavy, he spoke in a low whisper, Maria reading his lips.

DAVID

    [angry]

Take this shit back upstairs.

MARIA

But I already promised these to the church.

DAVID

Take them back upstairs, now!

The doorbell rings as David and Maria stand staring at each other. Maria does not move as David opens the door.

DEACON MARSH

Good evening, Sir. I'm Deacon Marsh from Greater Philadelphia, All Saints Christian Assembly. I am here to collect the donation from Sister Maria Santos.

DAVID

 There seems to be a

 mix-up, Deacon. Ms. Santos

is in my employ. She thought

we had a donation, but

 she was mistaken.

DEACON MARSH

Are you sure? I will

be more than happy

 to wait while you…

DAVID

[interrupting]

Yes, thank you, Deacon. If we come across anything, we will give you a call.

David closes the door in the Deacon's face. He turns to Maria and speaks in a quiet voice. Grabbing her shirt collar, he pulls her close and whispers in her ear.

   DAVID

If you want what is

best for both Angel

and yourself, don't ever

give anything from out of

 this house.

He releases Maria, who stumbles backward, and goes upstairs.

INT/KITCHEN OF DAVID TOUSSAINT/NEXT MORNING

After David shows up at Ruby’s home, she goes to him the following day before school. When David answers the door, he acts as if he is expecting her. He moves to the side and motions for her to enter.

DAVID

I can’t say that I’m surprised to see you this soon. I was expecting you to come yesterday.

 RUBY

What are you doing here, David?

 DAVID

I came to take you home.

RUBY

I am home, David. This is my home. I’m not going anywhere with you.

DAVID

Aren’t you going to ask about your daughter?

 RUBY

Where is she?

DAVID

Oh, so you’re concerned now?

RUBY

Let me see her, DAVID.

DAVID

She is asleep; she was up all night.

RUBY

[concerned]

Is she sick?

DAVID

No, Heartbroken.

Ruby shakes her head and rolls her eyes with sarcasm.

                         DAVID

Not because of you. Because of Maria, her nanny.  She quit yesterday.

RUBY

Why?

DAVID

Because I was getting ready to fire her. We had differences when it came to Angel. And… since I am her father, she had to go. She needs another nanny. Would you like to apply for the position? It pays extremely well!

RUBY

Go to hell, David!

DAVID

Where do you think I’m standing right now?

 RUBY

I’m done! Please stay away from my house.

DAVID

Oh, no, that won’t be happening. I didn’t move here to play games with you. This is how it is going to be. If you want to live in Philadelphia, you can live in Philadelphia. You can still have your friends and your mother too, for that matter. But I bought this house for you…for us. By the end of the week, I expect you to be living here. Either you are going to tell your mother, or I am going to tell her. It’s your choice, Ruby.

RUBY

You have lost your mind…I will never live with you. And don’t threaten me, David. We both know everything Angela did for me to have Angel. You can’t be that stupid. I am 15 years old. I was pregnant with Angel when I was 14. In the state of New York, the age of consent is 17 years of age. How are you going to get around that, David? If a DNA test is done, and you are the father, you are going straight to prison, and Angel will end up in the foster care system. Is that what you want? Checkmate!

DAVID

I really don’t give a damn what happens to Angel at this point. Angel was not my choice; she was Angela’s. I just went along with it to make her happy. I wanted Angela. I wanted a child by Angela…not you, Ruby. I loved Angela! Angela was my wife, not you, Ruby.

RUBY

Then why are you trying so hard to get me to live with you?

DAVID

You were the closest to Angela. Angela never knew Angel. She knew you. She loved you. I love you because she loved you. I want us to be a family like Angela, and I was supposed to be. You’re all I have left of her.

RUBY

David, I’m sorry. I never thought about your grief.  But I’m not Angela, and I think you need some help. I think Angela’s death has pushed you over the edge. I will find someone for you. I will even go with you.

DAVID

I don’t need to see anyone. All I need to know is when you are moving in.

Ruby looks at David, tears forming in her eyes. She’s always thought David was wonderful and kind. It wasn’t until now that she realized that David had died when Angela died. David needed her to save his life. But how could she? She didn’t know what to do. She didn’t have anyone to talk to.

RUBY

David, what if I stay where I am and come over and spend time with you and Angel? We could make it work. It would be just between us. I could be Angel’s play, Auntie.

DAVID

Ruby, I need you here. That is the only option that is going to work for me.

Ruby

David, I can’t. I can’t do it.

DAVID

Ok

RUBY

OK?

DAVID

Ok, I’m not going to argue with you. You can leave. I have things to do.

RUBY

David, what are you going to do?

DAVID

Ruby, get out!

RUBY

David, please!

David picks Ruby up and throws her over his shoulder. He opens the door, takes her to the front yard. He drops Ruby in the grass, rushes to the house, and locks the door. Ruby runs after him pounding on the door.

RUBY

David let me in. Please, David…I will move in with you. I promise. Open the door, David.

Ruby runs back to her house and picks up the phone to call Niemi.

RUBY

Mom, you have to come home…there is an emergency…Please, mom, come right now.

NIEMI[OS]

Ruby? what is wrong? Are you Ok! Ok, honey, calm down. I’m on my way.

Ruby, crying… picks up the phone and calls Evelyn Westlake. When she doesn’t pick up, Ruby leaves a voicemail message.

                             RUBY

Ms. Westlake, this is Ruby; please call me when you get this message. I need to ask you a few questions about David, your sister’s husband. Ruby hangs up the phone as Niemi rushes through the door.

NIEMI

Ruby, what’s wrong? What is the

 emergency? Why are you crying?

RUBY

Mama, I did something terrible and stupid. You will never forgive me, but I need your help right now. Please listen to me and don’t interrupt.

Niemi and Ruby sit down. Ruby starting at the beginning, tells her about Angela’s offer. Ruby ignoring Niemi’s expressions, gives her all the details. Niemi, crying, stands up and starts to pace. Before she speaks, a GUNSHOT rings out from next door. Ruby and Niemi run out the front door.

EXT/ HOME OF DAVID TOUSSAINT/NOON

Niemi and Rudy bang on David’s door. Ruby checks the side and back doors, which are both locked. Ruby picks up a brick, breaks the glass panel to the front door, sticks her hand in and turns the lock. David is lying on the living room floor.

NIEMI

Oh my God, Ruby, call 911.

Ruby

[calling Angel]

I have to find Angel.

Niemi picks up the phone to call 911 as Ruby runs through the house.

911 OPERATOR

What is the nature of your call?

NIEMI

My neighbor shot himself in the head. I am at his home now, at 52 Milton RD.

911 OPERATOR

Can I give you life-saving measures?

NIEMI

Ma’am…He’s gone. His brain is everywhere.

911 OPERATOR

I will send the police and an ambulance anyway.

Niemi hangs up the phone and see’s Ruby coming downstairs alone.

NIEMI

Where is the baby?

Ruby?

{panicking}

I can’t find her; I’ve looked everywhere.

NIEMI

Did you look in the garage?

Niemi and Ruby take off towards the garage. A black SUV is parked inside with the motor running. The dark tinted windows keep them from seeing inside. Niemi checks the doors; all are locked. Ruby runs past David’s body, picks up the brick, and returns to the garage.  She throws the brick at the windshield. Nothing happens. The brick barely makes a scratch on any of the windows.

NIEMI

We need to look in the house. You check the kitchen. I’m going to make they are not in David’s pocket.

Niemi turns David’s body over and finds the keys.

NIEMI

Ruby, I found them.

They run back to the garage. Niemi hits the key fob, and the doors unlock; they each run on opposite sides. Ruby opens the door and sees the unconscious baby in her car seat. She unbuckles and pulls her out as sirens are heard in the distance.

INT/JULLIARD SCHOOL OF DANCE-NEW YORK/DAY/ SUMMER/

Ruby is standing backstage at the Julliard School of Dance. As she bends over to stretch, her locket necklace hits her face. She opens the locket and kisses the picture of Angela looking back at her. She hears the panel call her name and goes on stage.

JUDGE 1

Good afternoon, young lady

Please tell us who you are and what solo you have prepared.

RUBY

Hello, I’m Ruby Niemi Maxwell. My solo will be a reenactment of a scene from the performance Cygnet en noir, staring Madame Angela Toussaint.

JUDGE 2

Ms. Maxwell, your reputation precedes you. Madame Toussaint has said beautiful things about you. If she was correct, and no doubt she was…It would be an honor to watch you pay tribute to her. Welcome to Julliard!

The music starts playing as Ruby goes to pointe. She smiles as she turns and sees her mom and Kendra sitting behind the judging panel, smiling and crying.
